Last year's flowers
Last Year's Flowers, 2020. Installation at Capacity 3 Gallery, Guelph, ON. Photocollage consisting of 4"x6" photographs, wire substrate, adhesive, 7' x 9'. This collage, taking up the entire wall opposite the chair and lamp is an obsessive collection of magnolia blossoms from buds to decay. A symbol of spring, the viewer can meditate their beauty. Although a testament to the belief that warmer days (both literal and metaphorical) will come again, the room is windowless and devoid of any indication of that coveted time arriving, or indeed, passing by. As the installation sits in the gallery, shut due to Covid-19, it takes on a new reading. As we also find ourselves locked away, this installation becomes the reflection of our pandemic experience - utilizing simulacra to live vicariously through as the real experience is denied us in order to stop the spread of a deadly virus.
