For your own good
“For Your Own Good” (2020), is a sculpture inspired by my time working in a Canadian long term care home during the first wave of Covid-19, which hit our elderly population the hardest in terms of mortality. Although the lockdown rules were successful in keeping the senior residents safe from the virus at the time, the emotional toll of being denied any visits from family, friends, or volunteers was in itself devastating. This piece, made of 100 carved figures from identical bars of soap, then placed in mason jars, which in turn are placed on shelves, allow us to look in on the miniature elderly figures, who look out at us. Although the pandemic has forced this isolation, it only amplifies what many elderly face historically within our society on a chronic and routine basis.
