As an artist I feel that highlighting or exposing ecological problems through art is no longer enough, that we now have an obligation to create a space for connection, change, and a tangible way forward for people who interact with our art practice. With all the world reeling from environmental disasters both close to home and far away, it is easy to fall into despair. I want to change my practice to connect with people to address their feelings of ecological grief using a science-based foundation for targeting areas for change that are within the power of citizens, both individually and as a collective. Through this research and artistic practice, the lessons learned will be the foundation for future projects dedicated to socially oriented, art-infused activism.
Below is an experimental installation. These butterfly lino cuts are printed on pages cut from books exposing the perils of enivironmental degradation, mass extinction, climate change, and habitat loss. In this installation there are approximately 750 prints from six books. This is the first rendition of the first project.
